SECRETARY-GENERAL WILL GO TO MYANMAR, AID OPERATIONS NEED TO BE

other international humanitarian organizations in Myanmar face the
enormous task of providing aid to poker size playing cards many as 2.4 million people.
The Secretary-General feels that the humanitarian initiatives ongoing
in Myanmar need to be expanded further in order to deal with the
massive scale of the disaster and the huge aid needs that remain. Ban

international organizations have brought in 350 tons of medical
stores. In addition, to control infection and further sickness, they
have 3 million doses of water purifier, 90,000 water bottles, over
50,000 mosquito nets with insecticide, and shelters.
Meanwhile, the number being fed by the World Food Program (WFP) is
more than 250,000 and estimates that the rice distributed will be
enough for approximately two weeks. High energy biscuits and beans
were also given out. The provisions have primarily been obtained
inside Myanmar , in part because of difficulties getting food and
other material into the country.

smoothly. He has been traveling around the country and working with
the government and with various humanitarian organizations.
More funds are still needed to support the relief efforts and the
Secretary-General and the Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN) together said that a fundraising effort will take
place on Sunday in Yangon . The gathering will include many
international organizations and will seek to obtain sufficient funds
to meet the most urgent challenges, as well as the longer-term
recovery efforts.
